Getting the powers of every fairytale princess ever sounds like it ’d be great , correct ? Perfect slant , detecting beans under untold stratum of bedding . But how do you use those powers to help store your missing brother ? That ’s the question at the heart of Mega Princess — the young creator - possess fantasy comic from Boom Studios .
Written by Kelly Thompson , and with art from Brianne Drouhard and M. Victoria Robado , Mega Princess follows the story of Maxine , a young princess reluctant to take on the part of being a ladylike nous of res publica who gets granted the superpower of every princess ever on her natal day .
“ Mega Princess is in reality an idea that my swain Adam Greene and I came up with when I was working on my novel Storykiller , ” Thompson told io9 over email . “ We seized on this approximation of a princess that has the powers of all the princess everywhere . now it seemed so good with opportunity — both in humor and in creativity — consider how ridiculous it is to have the power to feel a pea plant under 20 mattresses as per the Greco-Roman Princess and The Pea faery tarradiddle . On the other hand , suppose actually making that power piece of work to your vantage to save the day on an adventure , or while working as an unskilled detective . So that ’s where we jump , and then I added a impudent pony with battle armour … and we were on our fashion ! ”

The sassy pony — who features prominently in our sole preview from the first issue below — is just one of the ways Mega Princess plays with the distinctive fantasy of faggot tales and fantasy . “ I really jazz illusion , but I do n’t encounter myself particularly run to princesses , unless you ’re mixing it with other genres ( like investigator noir ) or doing some thing to debauch those ideas and conventions , ” Thompson continued . “ Fortunately Mega Princess does a minute of both ! ”
After a peck of licensed hits like Jem for IDW , Power Rangers : Pink for Boom , or A - violence and theupcoming Kate Bishop Hawkeye seriesat Marvel , Mega Princess also mark a variety of pace for the author , as her first Divine - own monthly series .
“ One of my first undertaking was a a creator - owned graphic novel called Heart In A Box , but that was for adults and a graphic novel , so this is my first experience with Godhead - owned single issues come out monthly and also my first raid into on-key ‘ all - years , ’ material , even though Jem & The Holograms by all odds aims to be moderately all - geezerhood appropriate , ” Thompson said . “ I think turn on something creator - owned always has a slightly different kind of excitement to it , as it typically allows you more freedoms and more risk of infection - taking , but it ’s also more nerve-racking in some ways as it can be tough to find your audience among all the corking record out there . ”

As Thompson cite , Mega Princess is also a book that test to reach all ages . It ’s a welcome thing in an earned run average with portion of mainstream comic provide to teenager and adults before they do new kids — something that she hopes helps engage readers who might not particularly be drawn to your usual princess - themed stories . “ I would love for young and one-time to show Mega Princess , boy and girls , gentleman’s gentleman and women , all . It ’s got a lot of great messages about finding yourself and being yourself — and of course of study deal of sassy sarcastic jokes , ” Thompson tell us . “ Despite the Good Book ‘ Princess ’ in the title , which I know can be a roadblock for male reader , it ’s truly just a great risky venture story and I suppose Max is a very relatable lead who wants dissimilar thing than her life naturally brings to her , and who struggle against those restrictions and labels , which is something I think a caboodle of us can relate to . ”
The first issue of Mega Princess — in a series of five — hit ledge tomorrow , November 9th .
