Red Card

Just a few days ago, Sony announced that it would be replacingPES 2019from its July PlayStation Plus free game selection toDetroit: Become Human. Not offering an explanation for the decision, some had speculated that Konami was at fault for the change. As it turns out, even Konami was taken by surprise from the swap.

In a commentgiven to GameSpot, a representative from Konami stated, “This decision was made by Sony and so please make an inquiry to Sony.” Shortly after, EuropeanPESbrand manager Lennart Bobzien told the site, “I cannot really tell you what happened because I just found out today, in the morning when I opened my laptop. I can’t really explain.”

Sony has since admitted the decision was its choice. “We have decided to make a change to the PS Plus games lineup this month, and will be offeringDetroit: Become HumanDigital Deluxe Edition instead ofPES 2019. This was a decision we decided to make as a company, and we apologize for any inconvenience.” That still doesn’t explain why the change was made.

I can understand thatPEShas a more limited appeal thanDetroit, but I know some people that were genuinely excited to be getting a sports title as a free game. Sony so rarely gives them out that it felt like a nice gimmie to those who do enjoy them. I suppose the company had decided upon something that would get more people interested in signing up for Plus, but I’m still not pleased with such a last minute change. It’s especially puzzling when the game’s developer wasn’t even the one making the call. Truly an odd situation.
